MEET BARBE-MOO

School: Little Bay Community of Schools

Name: Barbe-Moo

Theme: More than Meat

Concept: Paddock to plate and beyond.

The whole design reveals the journey of beef from paddock to plate and beyond. The base is divided into secure paddocks to represent cell farming practices and the importance of biosecurity to the beef industry. Importantly the cows are using one central watering hole, which helps farmers to look after their paddocks, crops and animals in drought areas. The miniature cows are coloured to represent different times of the day and night, to represent time passing on the farm. The front side of the cow is designed to be educational, it has been divided into the cuts of meat from an Angus beef cow. This idea is reminiscent of old-fashioned butcher shops and posters.
Surprisingly, the cow opens to reveal itself as a red hot smokey ‘Barbe-Moo’ with a few leather steaks cooking. The BBQ is an Aussie tradition that brings people together and shows the importance of the beef industry to the Australian way of life. The inner lid reveals a menu of bright fun pop art-inspired beef products.
The flip-side of the cow shows the important nutritional value of beef in a healthy diet, this is designed to be educational and informative. The shelving above the cow is based on our exciting research into the vast uses of beef cattle by-products; beef is more than just meat. The plates are based on the idea of decorative collector plates and are standard Aussie BBQ paper plates, depicting uses of beef by-products in items such as lipstick, bubble gum, soap, tennis racquet strings etc. These plates show the uses for beef cattle that are ‘beyond the plate’.

Stylistic influences:
  • Old fashioned butchers shops and posters
  • Pop art
  • Students own design ideas and aesthetic
