BEEF CATTLE FARMER

The duties of a beef cattle farmer may include feeding the cattle, giving medication to the cattle, cleaning and maintaining facilities, monitoring the cattle for any signs of illness or disease, assisting with calving, performing artificial insemination and managing waste.

Farmers also may be responsible for marketing their animals, transporting sales stock, bailing hay or harvesting other food used as feed, maintaining farm equipment and maintaining facilities.







Careers in the Beef Industry

What kind of jobs are in the beef industry?.. 

There’s a Feed Mill Manager who manages the mill and feed department, a Feed Mill Worker who works in the mill and feed department and of course the farmer owner or manager.
There’s a lot more jobs than a feed mill manager and worker. There are others like:
  • ·     Truck Driver
  • ·     Electrician
  • ·     Plumber
  • ·     Welder
  • ·     Beef Nutritionist
  • ·     Animal Health Technologist
  • ·     Meat Scientist
  • ·     University Professor

And more. Some jobs can be hard or easy. For example: If you want to be a truck driver you will need a drivers licence. Jobs can also take a long time to do. The easiest job to do is to milk the cow. If you wanted to be the owner you’ll need to own a farm. Beef industry jobs can be fun in many ways.

Farm Manager 

Is responsible for the management and general maintenance of a farm. On a crop farm, a farm manager will supervise the fertilizing, planting, spraying, cultivating and harvesting procedures of crops.

Farm Hand

A farm hand assists farmers in raising and feeding livestock and growing crops at a farm. On a typical work day, you will be required to perform many physically challenging activities such as cultivating soil, sowing crops and ensuring that weeds do not take over the crop patch. You will also be looking after the needs of livestock and other farm animals by feeding them, cleaning their pens and ensuring their overall wellbeing.

Farming is growing food, to help feed the world, to breed animals for the specific purpose of growing beef, chicken, lamb etc. People farm different types of produce to get different types of food. For example people breed cows to so we can live of its’ produce so the world can continue to expand, whereas people grow wheat to gain food for humans, as well as animals. 

Therefore farming helps the world go round, be growing produce to feed animals who in turn feed us humans.

Beef farming is when farmers raise cows for the purpose of using its’ products.  Beef farmers use the beef from cows plus other by- products for example lipstick, soap and shampoo. All parts of a cow is used.

·    Farm Assistant

Farm assistant jobs are usually the beginning of a career in the beef cattle industry. The work involves basic cattle handling duties, mustering with horses and motorbikes, operating machinery and equipment and property maintenance.

·    Stationhand or Farmhand 

A station hand or farmhand is likely to be involved in a wide range of tasks, these tasks include operating machinery, equipment and ride-on farm vehicles, handling cattle, mustering and preparation for competition, riding and handling horses and property maintenance.

·    Senior Stationhand 

A senior stationhand or farmhand is a skilled worker likely to be involved in coordinating a wide range of beef cattle and property operations. This includes handling cattle, transport, calving, parasite control, constructing fences, servicing and repairing bores and windmills and advanced horse riding and handling.

·    Head Stockperson  

A head stockperson is responsible for a number of workers and a range of beef cattle and property operations. This includes supervising cattle operations, feeding, mating, managing artificial breeding, managing vehicle and equipment maintenance, repair and maintenance of property water supplies and supervising and training staff.

·    Station or Farm Manager

A farm or station manager is likely to have responsibilities for managing beef cattle production activities. These include property planning and management, livestock breeding and production, marketing livestock, staff management, business planning and operations.

·    Rural Business Manager


A rural business manager has the primary responsibility for ensuring that the beef cattle enterprise is successfully managed. Responsibilities include whole farm planning and management, managing production systems, marketing products, strategic planning and rural enterprise management.
